Common Questions About Thermal Spray
How thick can a coating be applied?
Typically between 0.2mm - 2mm (0.008 - .080"). The limiting factor is the tendency of thick coatings to crack; this depends on the process and the material. Are coatings good for corrosion protection? Absolutely, nickel based super-alloys are corrosion resistant at temperatures up to 900 o C (1650F). High chromium levels protect against oxidation and sulfidation. Molybdenum additions prevent inter-granular chloride corrosion.
How long does it take to apply thermal spray?
Rates range anywhere from 0.5m 2 - 2.0m 2 (5.4sqft - 21.5sqft) per hour, depending on process, material and coating thickness.
How good are coatings for erosion or wear protection?
Cemented carbide coatings have hardness up to 1300 HV 300 . Typical metal and overlay values are around 450 HV 300 . HVOF coatings provide the best high temperature erosion protection.
What supporting equipment is required?
In preparation for thermal spray, BTS sandblasts and profiles the surface. Compressed air, electric power, water, and compressed gases are used to operate the equipment. BTS normally provides these supporting materials.
Are there hazards associated with thermal spray?
Yes there are, and we take appropriate precautions. BTS is seriously concerned about safety is a primary consideration of every project. We have a full time Safety Manager to ensure work is executed according to our health and safety procedures.
How long has BTS been applying coatings?
We have been in business for 26 years and have acquired considerable expertise over the years. The METALSPRAY™ brand of in-situ thermalspray was developed by BTS in the mid 1980's.
Is there any guarantee the coating will work?
Yes, we warrant most of the coatings we apply in order to reduce the customer's risk.
